Gandhi (Movie review by Óscar Rendón)

GANDHI
The story of a man that loved

"Gandhi" is a film made in 1982 that shows the main life events of the Indian leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was who, after many years of fights and efforts by Indian people, drew the path to Independence and established a pacific way to pronounce against injustice. This movie was directed by Richard Attenborough and was starred by Ben Kingsley playing Gandhi´s role. In the year it was produced, this movie was nominated for eleven Academy Awards categories, winning eight including best picture, best director and best actor.

After becoming a lawyer and living in South Africa during a period, Gandhi started to notice the inequality in the treatment given to British and Indian people in spite of being under the same government and supposedly having the same rights. Beginning in South Africa and next in India, this man led India to a massive non-violent movement to ask their freedom from British Crown and to get rights as citizens from a country that belonged only to them.

The main character was played by Ben Kingsley who was really flattered by critics because his good performance in Gandhi's role. Kingsley could really get the appearance, the expressions and even body movements of this famous leader. But not only Kingsley was who gave to the movie its awesome acting level but also the performance of supporting actors who make the audience get into the movie and think that it was filmed at the time when things happened.

If we do a review about some techniques used in the movie we are going to be conscious why this movie was nominated to many Academy Awards categories and was flattered by film experts. First of all, one of the most beautiful achievements of the movie was depict colors, textures, environments, landscapes and even weather of India. This movie really gets a wonderful picture of the context in which story took place, every frame is a great photography and recall that big and diverse country. Even the music that they used helps you to feel in India and to get the emotional content of every moment. Another great aspect of the movie is art direction because costumes and props were very believable.

The importance of the movie resides on its capacity to portrait a crucial moment not only in Indian history but also in world history. This film is almost a documentary about Gandhi and his work in the independence process. What it does is pretty much to collect and to display every important moment during the life of this leader, life that was given to serve others and to help India to get its freedom from British crown. Although it seems that the main motivation for the movie is the historical content, this movie takes you to reflect how important is working together to get a better world and teaches you about a beautiful thought way led by Gandhi in which love is the base.

In short, Gandhi by Richard Attenborough is a film that makes a beautiful portrait of one of the most important moments during Indian history showing the life of the leader that motivated a whole country to get its independence. Besides of being a charming visual experience, watching the movie is an opportunity to learn about a man that changed the History with his full of love heart.
